Obesity Statistics in Malaysia - Early this morning I want to share articles about health, this information is very useful more important than entertainment information beyond that, because it is directly involved in our own body.

What is obesity?

Obesity is a disease of nutrition. Obesity is associated with heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, gallstones and cancer. Generally, obesity is caused by excessive caloric intake and a sedentary lifestyle.

A person can be said to obese when body mass index (BMI) above the 40/35. Weight more than 30% of the normal range for height, gender and age. There are ways to check that we are in the stage where, overweight, normal and underweight. Refer calculated as shown below.



Formula BMI = (Weight in Kilograms / (height in meters x height in meters))

Below 18.5 = Less Weight 18.5 -24.9 Normal 25 - 29.9 = Excess Weight 30 & above = Obesity

Obesity Statistics in Malaysia.

In Malaysia, 4 out of 10 adults above the age of 18 suffer from common issue of overweight and obesity.

Statistics show that obesity among adults in the country surged 250 percent in the 10 years from 1996 to 2006.

Research by the Ministry of Health in 2006 showed that 14 per cent of the population is obese and it showed in every year.

Statistics from 2006 to 2008 showed that 630 children and adolescents diagnosed with diabetes with some of them already started to take insulin injections since the age of one year.

More alarming number of obese adults increased more than threefold over the past decade, from four percent in 1996 to 14 percent in 2006.

In addition, about 38 percent of teenagers between the ages of 12 to 18 years are classified as overweight. Studies done recently to 10,000 people showed 24 percent of students between the ages of six and 12 years over fat or obesity.

For your knowledge, with Malaysia ranked first among countries in Southeast Asia that most of its people are suffering from obesity and sixth place in the Asia Pacific region. This information is based on reports from the House of Commons 2011.

Sugar intake among Malaysians was too high at an average of 51 grams, more than the recommendations set by the World Health Organization (WHO ) of 50 grams.

Obesity Facts of Malaysia.
  • In Malaysia, 29.1% found the adult population overweight (BMI 25.0 - 29.9).
  • Among adults who are obese (14.0%), the women tend to suffer from obesity (17:42%) than men (10%).
  • Among ethnic groups, the Indians have the highest overweight (33.2%), followed by Malays (29.8%) and Chinese (28.5%).
  • The prevalence of underweight (BMI < 18.5) was 8.5%, this same level for men and women.
  • The prevalence of abdominal obesity (waist circumference women > 88cm and men > 102cm) is 17.4%. Women showed a higher prevalence (26%) than men (7.3%).
  • The prevalence of overweight adults increased with age, especially 35-39 year age group level up to 60-64 years.
  • The prevalence of underweight (BMI < 18.5) among adults in the city (9.8%) is higher than in rural areas (7.8%).
  • Among senior citizens aged 60 and above, as an indicator of muscle contraction prevalence of malnutrition was 19.9%, with men having a higher risk of malnutrition (23.7%) than women (16.8%).

Tips to avoid obesity
  • Try to cut 10% of your current weight, within 6 months from now! If your weight is 80kg, try to reduce 8 kg within 6 months of 1.3 kg per month.
  • Eating follow the requirements, do not go overeat.
  • Select or prepare food in a steaming, boiling or grilling.
  • Reduce your sedentary time, such as spending time in front of the television or computer.
  • Avoid calorie intake that too low and give us your weight gradually. The recommended weight loss is about 0.5 kg per week.
  • Fill up on vegetables, salads and fruit. It is low in calories and make you feel full for longer periods of time.
  • Cut the sweet drinks, replace with plain water and drinking enough.
